Believe it or not, both times I’ve stayed here were very last minute. It was another one of those fateful moments where the stars aligned and there was somehow a cancellation at this Airbnb. Rain or shine this Bellingham lookout has incredible views of Pleasant Bay, the forest and is one of the coziest stays I’ve been to. Just off of Chuckanut Drive (which is incredibly scenic and full of PNW hikes) this is a perfect Washington getaway for two.

2018

Bellingham, Washington is not far from Seattle, yet somehow I’ve only been there a handful of times; usually post-hiking or camping meals at Aslan Brewery. It’s a short and sweet 1.5 hour drive from Seattle!

We drove along the coastline gawking over the view of the islands as they became visible through gaps in the trees, and stopped at Larrabee State Park to get our nature fix.

Hiking recommendations: Fragrance Lake is a moderate 5.5 miles round trip. Snow lingered at the top and the lake had a thinning layer of ice on top of it. I somehow managed to stay on my two feet the entire slippery way up (I stupidly left my spikes in the car).

The Space

This small, cozy lookout is a studio space with a couch that converts to a bed. It has a small counter space and was plenty of room for 2 people for a night.

Note: There is no sink or bathroom in this lookout, but a very short walk to your own private bathroom at the owner’s house.

Shared Spaces

The lookout is maybe about 20 steps away from the owners large lovely home. This is where you will have access to a bathroom and outdoor kitchenette space. The owners are very welcoming and are happy sharing their space with guests.

There is also a hot tub on the deck of the owners home that guests have access to. It felt plenty private and was a very enjoyable experience with the stars overhead.

Book The Bellingham PNW Lookout

Listed as Pleasant Bay Lookout on Airbnb, this really is a lovely getaway for a solo self care trip or with your friend or partner. This place tends to book out very far in advance. But both times, I’ve gotten lucky with booking after a cancellation! Check back often if the dates you see aren’t available.

Summary

This was truly a magical place to hang out as the sun set. Even with the owner’s living next door, this stay feels completely private and very cozy. I spent most of my time hanging out on the balcony, enjoying cocktails we made and then cozied up in bed with a book. I highly recommend booking this or keeping an eye out for cancellations for your next getaway.
